December 4-8 is older driver safety awareness week. Ability to drive leads to independence. Ability to drive safely leads decreased risk of injury and death.

Emergency nurses can help keep our seniors independent and safe on the road by reminding them of the following.

4 things affect driving as we age! The physical and cognitive changes associated with aging, as well as medical conditions seen in the older driver and medications frequently taken by the older driver can lead to unsafe driving.

Taking 7 steps can mitigate those risks! 1. Plan ahead for safe driving conditions & know your route. 2. Make sure your medications (including over the counter and herbals) won’t  affect your driving, 3. Adjust your seat, mirrors, steering wheel for your size. 4. Wear your seat belt correctly. 5. Eliminate distractions. 6. Make sure you are in the correct frame of mind to drive (not angry, ill, or confused). 7. Exercise your driving muscles for strength & flexibility.
